Yes. Only if you use correct tones can we understand your speech. We native Chinese speakers do not understand Chinese songs without reading lyrics, only because the musical tones overrides the Chinese linguistic tones.
To tell you the truth, I understand many English songs (foreign language), but I do not understand most of Chinese songs (native language), unless reading lyrics.
